Your plan sounds great. I was wondering what kind of questions would you put on the questionaire? Also what is the Infinity Tool that you would use? I looked up David Langford but did not see that tool. Good luck with your research.
ReplyDeleteKim,
ReplyDeleteI am so very blessed to be working with a team of other ICs that have already created a Beginning of the Year questionnaire that I have decided to utilize. The questions are:
1.What is your area of expertise in teaching?
2.What are your strengths in your job? (You may include any strength, such as parent relationships/class management/rapport with student/knowledge of content areas, etc.)
3.What interests and skills do you have outside of the classroom that you’d like to share with me?
4.Do you have any of the following that you would be willing to share with other staff members? (Circle all that apply and briefly explain.)
a.Units _________________________________
b.Strategies ____________________________
c.Lessons _______________________________
d.Best practice ideas ___________________
e.Other _________________________________
5.What is an area in which you would like to have support this year?
6.How do you see the role(s) of the Instructional Coach as it pertains to you? (Circle all that apply and briefly explain.)
a.Mentor
b.Resource
c.Co-teacher
d.Coach
7.Please list any immediate needs with which the Instructional Coach could help you.
8.What resources do you foresee needing from your Instructional Coach over the next few months? (This would include materials for Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.)
9.Do you have any burning questions about the role of the Instructional Coach or how this role could benefit you?
10.Would you be open to having other teachers observe you teach in your classroom?
11.Would you like to meet: (circle all that apply)
a.Before school (time)
b.After school (time)
c.Conference time
d.Team planning (day and time)
As for the AFINITY TOOL (sorry - typo!) - it is a grouping tool used to identify and sort large quantities of ideas by means of likeness or similarity. Think of it as a giant cartegorizing poster that shows which areas are most commonly occuring.
Hope all of this helps clarify! Thanks for the feedback!
A new idea that I am also going to incorporate into this project, as well as my daily job, was given to me inadvertently by a fellow teacher in a conversation that had nothing to do with my project. It involves creating a binder with a page dedicated to each teacher – picture included. In it I will post my reflections, positive words, goals and affirmations as to each teacher’s strengths and weaknesses. This is not a book I will share with the teachers, but more of a spiritual meditation device for me to use in helping them achieve their best. I already do this very sort of thing with my family and it has made lots of "dreams come true"! But it wasn't until last night that I had the "eureka" momment to apply to the teachers I will work with, too! You'd be amazed at the power the mind can hold!
ReplyDeleteGreat action plan! I was a Math Coach for 2 elementary schools so I know what it is like to have to introduce yourself and build trust and credibility.
ReplyDeleteHave they had an Instructional Coach previously? In my case one of the open ended questions I asked in a survey were: What did your previous coach do that was effective? What did your previous coach do that was ineffective? Is there anything else you would like me to know about yourself or the school?
Right away I could see what they didn't like that the old coach did. It kept me from being seen as "more of the same".
Kim,
ReplyDeleteI would suggest that you check into information by Pete Hall on Instructional Coaching. I was able to attend a workshop by him last week and his information was very insightful.
www.educationhall.com
Book: Building Teachers'Capacity for Success: A collaborative approach for coaches and school leaders. By. Pete Hall and Alisa Simeral.
What suggestions would you have for me. The peer coaching program that I will be implementing will not include an instructional coach or head "coach" as it were. Instead each team will consist of 4-6 members who will observer and offer assistance to each other.
